How do I apply for student allowance in Sweden?

The Swedish National Board of Student Aid (Centrala Studiestödsnämnden, CSN) is in charge of everything concerning the Swedish student aid.

Student allowance in Sweden is an important part of higher education. Did you know that Swedes are paid to study in Sweden? And did you know that you might be too? Centrala Studiestödsnämnden, CSN awards no less than 23 billion SEK in student aid. Thereby making it possible for 900,000 students a year to pursue their studies, regardless of their social, economic or geographic background.

What is CSN?

The Swedish National Board of Student Aid (called Centrala Studiestödsnämnden, CSN in Swedish) is in charge of everything concerning the Swedish student aid. CSN administrates:

  • the examination of the applications,
  • the distribution of the loans and grants,
  • and the repayment of the loans.

The Swedish student allowance is usually divided into two categories: a loan and a grant. The grant comes with no demands of repayment as long as you successfully comply with your studies. The loan on the contrary must be repaid regardless of you achievements. Student aid is granted for both studies in Sweden and abroad.

The Swedish National Board of Student Aid does not only grant student aid for university studies. You can get student aid for many different types of studies, such as:

Maybe. But it depends on several factors. You need to meet the basic requirements that apply to all applicants AND meet the specific requirements that apply in your personal case.

The regulations concerning the entitlement to student aid for foreigners in Sweden are very complex. We therefore strongly recommend you to contact the Swedish National Board of Student Aid, so that you get the correct information concerning you personal case.

However, the general “rule” says that you are entitled to student aid in Sweden, if you moved to Sweden for a different reason than studying here.

How do I apply to student allowance in Sweden?

You have two options. You can either apply by filling out a paper form. Or apply online with BankID. You usually get an answer within weeks (it usually takes longer if you apply for studies abroad).
