Little Asia in Lund

What do you miss the most when you’re living far from home? For me, it’s 3Fs: Families, Friends and Food! Coming from a country known for its distinctive and rich-in-flavour foods, there are times when I crave for a little taste of home in Sweden.

Coming from a country known for its distinctive and rich flavours, there are times when I crave a little taste of home while living in Sweden. Luckily for me, there are some Asian speciality shops and restaurants offering asian food in Lund where I can find a remedy whenever homesickness strikes.

Of course, it is not an apples-to-apples comparison when we look at the shops and restaurants back home, in terms of stock and variety. Still, it is good to have them here. Especially now, when travelling overseas is not recommended and visiting family back home is not a reasonable option.

These places can help you bring a taste of Asia into your kitchen:

Lokchan

Little Asia, a food sanctuary, heaven on Earth — you name it. This place is by far the most complete Asian shop in Lund. In addition to Indonesian foods, which are rare in Sweden, they also stock Thai, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Malaysian and many more cuisines.

Visit their shop on Klostergatan 14K, where you can find various gems ranging from okonomiyaki sauce and gochujang to instant noodles and seasoning for rendang, an Indonesian beef stew normally served in a meal set called nasi padang. Nasi padang is one of the most loved comfort foods in Indonesia. It is so popular and tasty that a Norwegian singer even made a song about it (check it here).

Kött & Spices

Located at Stora Södergatan 8, this shop sells foods mostly from South Asia. So, if you have been wondering where to get samosas or Red Label tea for Indian-style milk tea, this is the right place to visit in Lund.

They also sell fresh vegetables and fresh meat, but the highlight for me is their South Asian product selection.

Fengsson Dumpling

This tiny restaurant is very well reviewed on TripAdvisor despite its secluded location on Winstrupsgatan 1. It is not far from Lund Central Station, but since it is located in a kind of basement, the diner is not immediately noticeable.

However, if you pass by the area during lunchtime, the queue outside is usually quite long, so you will hardly miss it. In terms of taste, I am not a food expert, but I think this place serves the best dumplings in town.

On their website, this Chinese restaurant writes: “What we are doing is to change your impression of Chinese food in Sweden.”

I am not entirely sure what they mean by that, but personally, I think Asian food sold outside its country of origin is often adjusted to a certain level for marketing purposes. Most of the time, Asian cuisine is reduced to little more than wok dishes and fritters.

That is not the case with Mui Gong.

The spiciness of their food is authentic, and they offer much more than protein coated in fried batter. My favourite dish at the restaurant is their homemade tofu.

Another tiny diner in Lund specialising in Sichuan food. It is only open during lunchtime (11:30–14:00) and mostly serves takeaway. Like many other dining places in Lund, they also offer vegetarian options. This spot is quite popular among students due to its bold flavours and affordable prices.

In addition to the places listed above, supermarket chains such as ICA and Willys also have Asian food sections. However, the selection is much smaller and mainly consists of own-brand or Westernised products rather than Asian brands. So, if you want to explore a bit more and experience asian food in Lund, these places are definitely must-visits.

    • I’ve never been to Thuy, where is it? PS: yes, that was from last time, let’s get our dose of homemade tofu again once the situation is back to normal 🙂

      • I definitely miss our little get togethers for Swedish Fika and Asian lunches! There’s a new noodle spot in Lund now that serves really good noodles, you would really like it!

  1. Should include Rose Garden restaurant, which provide Lunch&dinner buffet of Asian’s.
Don’t miss the self cook noodles!
…..unfortunately due to COVID-19 situation, it close temporary.

    • Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Rose Garden is nice too but I was thinking to keep it only five in this post. Maybe for the next one 🙂
