Allemansrätten – The everyman’s right

When I first arrived in Sweden, I noticed that there is so much greenery around, even in the city. Near my first apartment, there was a forest right behind my place and it was only 10 minutes away from the city. It was simply amazing. From where I came from, pieces of land like that would have been turned into precious development.

The Swedish nature is so beautiful and it is no wonder that Swedes themselves love the outdoors so much. I may have fallen in love with the nature myself. It is simply amazing to watch the changes in the seasons. With such beautiful nature, you may want to know what you can and cannot do when you are outdoors.

Allemansrätten basically allows everyone to enjoy Swedish nature freely with the exceptions of nature reserves and some protected areas where some of the rules in allemansrätten do not apply.

What can you do outdoors?

Since allemansrätten allows everyone to enjoy the nature freely, activities such as walking, cycling, skiing and camping are allowed on most land except private property. There are other outdoor activities that are very common among the Swedes such as:

  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Skiing
  • Horse riding
  • Hunting
  • Fishing
  • Flower, berry and mushroom picking
  • Swimming
  • Boating/Kayaking

Though one can do basically almost anything outdoors, but it is also very important to know the rules and the restrictions for each activity.

Take fishing for example. You will need to know which locations allow fishing with or without a license. Fishing is regulated by the Fisheries Act, therefore certain rules apply. If you want to know more about the rules for the activities listed above, you may visit Swedish Environment Protection Agency (Svenska Naturvårdsverket). Their website is in Swedish but there is an option to switch the language to English.

I’m Yen Ling and I am originally from Malaysia and have been living in Stockholm for the past 2½ years. I love to travel and I love food. Therefore, I travel to places for good food. When I am not working in my kitchen, I try to hit the gym as often as possible or go out for a run while enjoying the lovely Swedish air.

  1. Superb blog! Do you have any helpful hints for aspiring writers?

I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost
on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices
out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any tips?
    Cheers!
