Stockholm’s little sister Gothenburg

As the little sister of Sweden’s most precious and indeed quite breathtaking capital, Gothenburg is somehow left behind. Compared to the magnetic impact of Stockholm, it seems almost forgotten. Although it is the second biggest city in Sweden, it does regularly stand back when tourists plan their weekends, why though?

It seems like a mystery why this city is so often forgotten. Here are some reasons why people should think more about Gothenburg.

Gothenburg has humour

Göteborg humour is quite apparent, as its puns and irony will brighten up your day. While Swedes, in general, are often said to have no humour at all, Göteborgare will gladly prove that wrong.

Gothenburg has character

A Göteborgare is distinct from a Stockholmare. While Stockholm is often thought of as posh, Gothenburg is open-minded and friendly. Whereas people from the north are sometimes said to fear contact the most, a Göteborgare will happily look past this and welcome new people warmly (and often).

Gothenburg is international

Two universities attract students of every nationality, and companies employ people from all over the world. Some stay only for a short while, while others remain for much longer, and the latter is often the case.

Gothenburg is diverse

While café chains and mainstream attractions already saturate Stockholm, Gothenburg still guards a unique culture. With independent coffee shops and local markets, the city strengthens its character day by day. Although Gothenburg has its Instagram hotspots as well, these places are neither overcrowded nor clichéd. Step up to Masthuggskyrkan or Skansen Kronan to experience this for yourself while learning about the city’s rich history.

Gothenburg is the heart of the West Coast

The harbour is the city’s pulse. It surpasses Stockholm’s in both size and commerce. The waterways are rarely empty, as ferries, cruise ships and sailing boats keep the city constantly in motion. The local water culture is vibrant and alive.

Gothenburg is Sweden’s Amsterdam

The city we know today was largely built by the Dutch during the 1600s. Gothenburg’s many canals and distinctive layout give it a unique aesthetic that is hard not to associate with places such as Amsterdam.

Gothenburg has a lively cultural scene

With festivals, exhibitions and music events, Gothenburg is an art and culture lover’s paradise. The city is a hotspot for almost everything, rarely leaving creative desires unfulfilled.

Gothenburg has food for everyone

Gothenburg offers both traditional Swedish cuisine and strong international influences when it comes to food—and sometimes even to life itself. Visit Jinx Food or Gourmetkorv to experience Swedish recipes blended with Thai, German, American and British flavours. One should also not forget the fresh seafood at Feskekôrka and the many Michelin-starred restaurants across the city.

Gothenburg is a growing city

It is growing both in population and in business. As a hotspot for startups and people entering working life, it is an ideal place for turning dreams into reality.

Gothenburg has a vision

Gothenburg lets dreams become reality. Sweden as a whole encourages people to follow their ambitions, and the city itself provides fertile ground for growth. It offers a well-established foundation for a happy life, even though it is smaller than the capital.

Gothenburg has the perfect size

The city centre—with areas such as Haga, Vasastaden, Vallgraven and Nordstaden—is easily accessible on foot. Surrounding neighbourhoods are well connected by both bus and tram. The city feels homely, offering a charming small-town atmosphere while still buzzing with energy. With less traffic and fewer crowds, Gothenburg is easy to enjoy.

Gothenburg has a great atmosphere

From nightlife stretching from Första to Andra and Tredje Långgatan, to brunch in Haga, lunch in Majorna and dinner along Avenyn, the city offers variety every day. You can even sunbathe on an island, picnic in a park or browse a gallery—all in one single day.

In conclusion

Gothenburg is a gallery in itself. This city feels like a dream that somehow became reality. Like any city, it has its downsides, but the upsides clearly outweigh them. Every city needs certain elements, and Gothenburg brings them together effortlessly. Sometimes overlooked because of its size, it is a city that truly deserves more attention.

Hejsan! I am Lara, a German Newbie to Sweden and recent business studies and German graduate from Mannheim University. Since my semester abroad in Växjö nearly two years ago, Sweden did not let me go, as I always wanted to come back. And now, I finally will: having a bachelor’s degree in my pocket and a bucket list filled with adventures, my first stop will be a three months lasting internship in Gothenburg. As much as I am looking forward to gathering experiences in working life, I am also excited about exploring this great city with all its culture, nature and people. I hope you enjoy my impressions as much as I do. Vi hörs!

  1. Hi Lara, another brilliant story! I can confirm everything you said about Gothenburg – I’ve been there just a few weeks ago. A weekend trip is far too short to explore all the interesting things. I’ve also been to Stockholm many years ago, but I really have to say that I enjoyed Gothenburg most. Anyway,I think Sweden calls for another visit!
